Easing clients back after ankle sprains

For those around 6 weeks post grade II sprain, I’m pairing gentle 3x/week strength (split squats and RDLs in pain-free range) with daily balance on a foam pad (3x30s) and jog-walk intervals 1:1 x 10, checking next-day swelling and soreness… Trainers — any small tweaks you’ve found that cut flare-ups, like softer surfaces early on or setting a 170 spm cadence to reduce overstriding?

I’ve seen fewer flares when the first 2–3 weeks of jog-walks are done in a lace-up brace and we cue ‘quiet feet’ — like you’re sneaking past a sleeping dog. If they get any front-of-ankle pinch, I swap to heel-elevated split squats or reverse lunges and keep runs on flat, straight paths rather than soft, uneven trails early.

Small tweak that’s helped: alongside the brace @jordan92_w mentioned, I use a 3–5 mm temporary heel lift for the first 10–14 days of jog‑walks to trim end‑range dorsiflexion and I see fewer next‑day balloons. Wean it out once they’re holding about 170–175 spm; skip if the Achilles gets cranky — think of it as a tiny step‑stool for the ankle.
